We get asked this question more than almost any other, usually from a parent standing in front of our earrings collection for the first time, unsure where to even start. We are Karishma Jamwal and Rajni Shrestha, the founders of LadyBug Jewels, and we built this brand as two mothers who went looking for fine jewellery for our own daughters and couldn't find a brand in India that treated a child's first piece of jewellery with the same seriousness as an adult's. This piece is everything we wish someone had told us before we bought that first pair ourselves.
A first pair of earrings is not the same purchase as any other piece of jewellery in a child's life. It sits against sensitive skin, often for years without being removed, and it's usually chosen once and worn until the child is old enough to ask for something different. That combination, permanence plus sensitivity, is exactly why the checklist for a child's first earrings should look different from the checklist for anything else you'd buy them.
The single biggest mix-up we see parents make is treating colour as a proxy for safety. A yellow, gold-toned earring can be base metal, gold-plated brass, or genuine gold, and only one of those is appropriate for a child's first piercing. Plating wears off with contact against skin and sweat, and what's underneath it, often nickel or another base alloy, is a common trigger for skin irritation and allergic reaction in children, whose skin is generally more reactive than an adult's.
This is why we build every LadyBug Jewels piece in 14 karat or 18 karat BIS Hallmark gold. BIS Hallmarking is the Government of India's certification standard for gold purity, and every piece we ship carries it, along with a Diamond Certificate where applicable and a tax invoice with full product details. That paperwork isn't decoration. It's the only way a parent can actually verify what's touching their child's ears, rather than trusting a colour or a price tag.
There's also a durability angle most parents don't think about until it's already a problem. Plated jewellery changes character over months of daily wear, the surface layer thinning and the underlying metal starting to show through, which is often exactly when a parent notices skin around the earlobe reacting for the first time. Solid, hallmarked gold doesn't have that failure point, because the purity is consistent all the way through the piece, not just on the surface.
When we're advising a parent who's buying their child's very first pair, we walk them through four checks, in this order, before anything about design or style comes into the conversation.
First, purity and certification. Is the metal hallmarked, and does the seller actually provide the certificate, not just a claim on a product page.
Second, hypoallergenic reliability. Is the metal itself resistant to triggering skin reactions, not just marketed as gentle, given how much time a first pair spends against a child's skin.
Third, size and weight appropriate for a small, developing ear. A first earring should be proportionate and light, not a scaled-down version of an adult design.
Fourth, sourcing transparency for any stones involved. Where did the diamond or gemstone come from, and is there a certificate backing that claim.
Only once those four are settled do we let a parent move on to choosing a design they and their daughter actually love. Skipping ahead to design first is how parents end up making a decision on the two things that matter least.
We built this ordering deliberately, not as a sales script but because it mirrors how we made the decision for our own daughters. Design is the fun part, and it should stay that way, but it can only stay fun if the safety questions are already answered before you start scrolling through options.
The following describes a real, current product from our catalogue, not a hypothetical.
One of the pieces we specifically describe on our own site as a first earring is our Halo Diamond stud, a small gold earring built around a single centre diamond. It's built in 14 or 18 karat gold, weighs a light 1.3 grams, and is set with a natural, SGL-certified diamond at 0.2 carats. It carries BIS Hallmark certification for the gold and ships from ₹35,142 depending on the gold purity and stone selected.
We describe it as a first earring specifically because it satisfies all four points of our own standard at once: certified purity, a hypoallergenic gold base, a light and proportionate size at just over a gram, and a certified stone rather than an uncertified filler. It's deliberately simple. A first earring's job is to be worn comfortably and safely, not to be the most elaborate piece in a child's future collection.
Every piece, including this one, is handmade in small, mindful batches rather than produced at scale, with our master jewellers handling stone setting, gold hammering, and final polish by hand. That slower process is part of why we can hold to the four-point standard on every single order rather than treating it as a marketing claim on some pieces and not others.
| Dimension | Everyday fashion/imitation earrings | BIS Hallmark fine gold earrings |
|---|---|---|
| Metal purity | Often unverified, gold-plated over base metal | Certified 14K or 18K, BIS Hallmarked |
| Skin reaction risk | Higher, plating wears and can expose base alloy | Lower, hypoallergenic gold base |
| Documentation | Rarely provided | BIS Hallmark certificate, diamond certificate where applicable, tax invoice |
| Durability against daily wear | Plating fades, colour changes over months | Gold purity doesn't fade or change |
| Typical weight for a first design | Varies widely, not designed specifically for small ears | Built light and proportionate, for example 1.3 grams on our Halo Diamond |
| Price transparency | Often bundled or unclear | Price reflects gold value, making charges, stone charges and GST, stated upfront |
Myth 1: any gold-coloured earring is fine for a first piercing. Colour tells you nothing about what's actually touching the skin. Only verified purity, backed by a hallmark certificate, tells you that.
Myth 2: BIS Hallmarking only matters for jewellery bought as an investment, not for a child's first pair. Hallmarking exists to verify purity, and purity is exactly what determines whether the metal is likely to irritate sensitive skin. If anything, it matters more for a first pair than for adult jewellery bought purely for value, because a child's skin is more reactive and the piece is worn for longer stretches without being removed.
Myth 3: a bigger or heavier earring is a better first gift. A first earring's job is comfort against a small, developing ear. Our own Halo Diamond, built specifically as a first-earring design, weighs a little over a gram for exactly that reason. Heavier, more elaborate pieces are better suited to an older child who has already worn earrings comfortably for a while.
We started LadyBug Jewels because we went through this exact search ourselves, for our own daughters, and kept running into the same gap: brands that took gold jewellery seriously treated it as an adult category, and brands that made things for children treated the jewellery itself as an afterthought. Every piece we make, starting with a first earring, is built to hold both of those standards at once, fine jewellery discipline applied to a child's actual comfort and safety. Our own mission statement is simple: to create jewellery that little girls will cherish today, and treasure forever. A first pair of earrings, chosen properly, is where that starts.
1. How long does it take to receive a first pair of earrings after ordering?
All our pieces are made-to-order, so we need a minimum of fifteen business days to ship, with delivery typically completed within three to four weeks from the date of order. If you need it sooner for an occasion, contact us directly and we may be able to work to a shorter timeline at an additional cost.
2. Will I actually receive certification with the earrings?
Yes. Every order includes BIS Hallmark certification for the gold, a Diamond Certificate where a diamond is used, and a tax invoice with full product details.
3. Can I pay cash on delivery for a first pair of earrings?
No, we don't offer cash on delivery. Full payment is required in advance, and production only begins once payment is confirmed, since every piece is made to order rather than pulled from ready stock.
4. If I choose a personalised or customised design, can I exchange it later?
No. Customised or personalised pieces are not eligible for exchange or refund, so it's worth confirming sizing and design details carefully before placing a custom order.
5. Do you have a physical store where I can see the earrings in person before buying?
Not currently. We operate exclusively online through our website, so all purchases, including a first pair, are made there rather than in a showroom.
6. Why might the exact gold weight of my earrings vary slightly from the listing?
All our pieces are handmade or cast individually rather than mass-produced, so a small variation in weight is normal, and pricing is adjusted accordingly to reflect the actual gold, making charges, and stone content.
